unless you know the construction industry – the hassle would prob not be worth the amount of money you may or may not save. plus you may get taken advantage of if you don’t know what to look for, what to ask for and what to expect
My brother did. He saved money on both the construction and dong some of the finishing work himself. It was a log home, so he did all the staining and finishing. That was fine with the carpenter, who only charged him for carpentry. He actually didn’t want his workers tied up with those tasks. My brother also got to pick the plumber, electrician and heating contractor. This is alright if you want to pick and screen who you want doing the work, and if you have the personality to do so. He does, I don’t. He was satisfied with both the savings and his control over the finished product. Sorry, I can’t tell you what the savings were. But you have to consider that it’s easier to hide expenses and hand an inflated bill over to the owner if the owner isn’t as involved.
You will probably save 10%-15% doing it yourself. You should read a home building book. The advantage of using a general contractor is they are responsible for all the work and know everything you need as far as process, permits etc.
