How Do You Determine Savings After Having Insulation Blown Into Walls?

April 25, 2009

We at end-October, we had insulation blown into our walls. Based on our gas bill usage, we do not appear to be using less. Weather data does indicate this winter has been a little colder than last years.
What is the best way to measure whether or not our new insulation is generating savings?

If the weather is colder, you need to determine if you are using more gas than last year. Changes in the weather make it difficult to compare savings. Closest you will come is after a few months of monitoring the cost.

calculate your over all savings at the end of the heating season, not during the point of peak usage, if there was a savings, don`t worry it will show up in your billing statement, while you are looking at the house, check the rest of the building for any and all sources of heat escape and/or loss, including loss thru doors, windows vents and plumbing chases

It’s not a quick study. You have to take the monthly utility bills for the previous 1-2 years and then compare them to the utility bills for the 1-2 years after you had the insulation put in.
