Is Radiant Barrier Really Worth Installing And Has Anyone Noticed The Savings & Heat Difference In Their Home?

January 8, 2010

i live in Texas & i am debating wether or not to install it in conjuntion with fiberglass insulation, in the attic space and in the wall space where the sun hits the most in the afternoon. Thanks for your replies.

Not sure what you mean by a “radiant barrier” Attic insulation will give you the most improvement for the dollar. Insulating a wall after construction is debatable. More of the heat gain/loss comes/goes thru the windows than thru the walls.
I would consider using argon gas filled, double pane windows before I tried to add insulation to an existing wall. I have them facing south and they work great. Remember you can only get so much insulation in an existing wall and compressing the insulation defeats its purpose. Of course, compressing insulation is not a problem in the attic where it simply lays atop the joists above the ceiling – the more you pile on the better.
