How Much Is $100 Million In Federal Government Savings?

Lets say $1800 billion of annual federal deficit is represented by the distance from San Francisco to New York. And in order to close the deficit hole a traveler must walk all the way from SF to NY.
The traveler starts the the entrance of SF-Oakland bay bridge and heads east. How far will the first $100 million take the traveler?

Thankfully, you have a math teacher in the crowd.
    100 milllion / 1.8 trillion = .00005, or .005%
Distance from San Francisco to New York City = 2,906 miles by driving
    .00005(2,906) = .16 miles, or about 851 feet.
Length of Golden Gate Bridge = 8,981 feet.
Therefore, it will get you about a 1/10th of the way across the bridge.

With the money saved, you could send a bulk mail envelope to every citizen of this country, but you couldn’t mail a first class envelope to every citizen.
As to your question, you’d get about 900 feet or 300 yards. Going 60 mph (lotsa look in this traffic jam), it would take 10 seconds.

Obama made the point yesterday that the 100 million was only a A START, and heowuld have to go line by line through the budget to find more to cut.

~0.00268% of the budget, something like a shaving off part of a single sesame seed on a Big Mac and trying to call it dieting.

Less than 1/10th of one percent of their budget. BFD.

Like buying a million dollar home, and then cutting back on the lawn gnomes to save money.

I’m not sure but it’s a step in the right direction.

  • Thinking of investing your savings?

While increasing your savings is good, multiplying your money through smart investments feels great - there are lots of opportunities out there and you can be successful if you're arming yourself with the right information.

    Where to start?

If you're going to try your luck on the stock market or trading options, first start by learning the basics and delay as much as possible buying real positions. One way of getting hands-on experience with the markets is through online trading - either forex or binary options are good learning grounds and most online brokers offer trial accounts free of charge (if you're wondering what are binary options, 24option.com has very good resources on it, besides offering a free practice account and a wealth of information about binary trading in general). Final warning for the very eager: binary options are exotic financial instruments; real trading involves substantial risk of monetary loss.
