My husband is active duty military and we are currently putting about $100/month into his TSP. I have heard others recommend only contributing in a 401K up to an employer match. Since his TSP doesn’t match, would it be better to contribute to a Roth IRA instead?

But, TSP DOES match up to 5% of investment. I’ve contributed to the G, F & C funds for almost 20 years as a Postal Employee. I think it’s great!
I’ve spoken to a financial aid advisor about this as well. He said to do both. TSP is government backed, so it’s safe. Even if it isn’t matched. Having “diversified funds” is the best route. Take what you can save per month and put half into TSP and half into a Roth. Good luck!
