Safe is a pretty relative term. There are a variety of options available for anyone. Savings accounts typically yield a low interest rate however hsbcdirect.com and emigrantdirect.com both pay around 5% for a savings account and are FDIC insured. That is the safest I know. Outside of that the top three safest options would be: 1. money market account / CD 2. bonds 3. S&P 500 index funds
If you don’t need the money for at least 5 years check out an S&P Index fund from either Vangaurd or Fidelity.

I tend to shop around for the best deal and could care less (to a point that is) how long it takes me to receive the product, but in this market I save where I can (College is expensive).

Hello All,
I have a Savings account with a nationalized bank with a cheque book and minimum balance limit of Rs.1000/-.
Now the current balance is Rs.1200/-
What will happen if I issue a cheque to someone for Rs.1200/- and will the cheque get encashed?
Will I be penalized by the bank for not maintaining the minimum balance?
What would be the other consequences?
