If you paid full last Tax year full rate NI you are entitled to Contribution-based JSA (for 6 months) irrespective of savings etc.
To get other benefits (eg. help with mortgage / rent, council tax rebates) etc you have to be on the Income-based (means tested) JSA – I believe you will get something if your savings are less than £16,000 (to get full JSA savings need to be less than about £3000) == check below or ask the Job Centre

Why how much do you need to give away?

£2000
The Job seekers allowance is not means tested so savings are not taken into consideration. If you have lost your job, unless for reasons of Gross Misconduct or resignation, you can claim the allowance from the day your employment ceased. I do believe that there is some time limit on the receiving the allowance as it was at one time a year. Also you must while receiving it be actively seen to be looking for work.
